Letters to the Editor To the Editor, I've never seen your paper before. What a great thing. Thanks for putting it together. I wrote to Bevan Dufty when I heard the Whole Foods Market (“New Whole Foods at Market & Dolores Still Faces Hurdles,” July-August) was going into the Bell Market on 24th St. I felt that there were three things wrong with that deal. One is that Whole Foods headquarters is in Texas, so it's like shopping at Home Depot instead of your local lumber and hardware. Two is that they are non-union, and three is that they are all over San Francisco now. In your article you quote Lawrence Badiner of the Planning Dept. as saying the City has lost a number of grocery stores, and the Whole Foods would expand the range of supermarkets in that area. Well, he could look right across the street to the huge Safeway. There are many wonderful groceries in the neighborhoods he mentions. Let's start with Golden Produce right across Church Street from the Safeway. They have great produce and a new store right up the block with wonderful fish and meat. Then there is Harvest Market up on Market and Noe, BuyRite on 18th near Dolores, Rainbow Grocery ( a worker owned grocery!) down on Division, Buffalo Market on Castro and 19th, and Natali's on Hayes near Laguna. I'm sure I'm leaving some out but these are the stores I give my business to. We don't need another “Whole Paycheck” in this area. I feel as if we are surrounded. Circle the wagons. Judith Keenan
