Castro Crime Beat: September 2008
August 17, 6:30 p.m., Market Street at Noe Street, Auto Burglary
A man returned to his vehicle that was parked in the Noe and Market Center Garage to find his rear window smashed. The victim’s backpack containing a camera, laptop, identification, cash, airline tickets and keys was stolen along with a laptop belonging to a second victim.
August 16, 10:40 p.m., 3000 Block of 18th Street, Aggravated Assault With a Deadly Weapon
Patrol officers responded to a shooting that took place on the block. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to his right hand and was taken to San Francisco General Hospital by medics. The officers questioned several people, while others ran from the area, refusing to help the police. The Gang Task Force took over the investigation. No arrest has been made.
August 15, 2:15 a.m., 3000 Block of 18th Street, Possession of a Concealed Firearm
The police were called in response to the sound of gunshots and three male suspects running down the street. When the officers arrived they stopped one suspect and seized a loaded firearm concealed in the suspect’s jacket. The police detained several other persons for further investigation. One arrest was made.
August 14, 11 p.m., 400 Block of Guerrero Street, Robbery
A woman was sitting inside a restaurant next to an open window, working on her laptop when a male suspect ran inside the restaurant and grabbed the laptop from her hands. He and two other suspects, waiting outside, ran from the restaurant, out of sight. No arrests have been made.
August 11, 4:00 p.m., 900 Block of Dolores Street, Auto Burglary
A woman returned to her car to find the door had been forced open and her car stereo, compact discs and her laptop computer were stolen.
August 11, 9:15 a.m., 100 Block of Eureka Street, Residential Burglary
A couple returned to their home to find that a window fan had been moved from its original position. They also found damage on the floors, walls and their speaker system. The residents believe that scaffolding adjacent to their house fell against their home and caused damage and that the construction workers next door entered their home, unlawfully, in an attempt to repair the damage.
August 9, 3:00 a.m., 100 Block of Portola Drive, Vehicle Vandalism
A witness saw a male suspect pull his arm out of the smashed window of the vehicle belonging to the witness’s neighbor. The police were called and detained a suspect in the area of 17th and Eureka streets.
The suspect was later released because he could not be identified as the man who vandalized the vehicle. No property was stolen from the vehicle.
August 8, 5:55 p.m., 500 Block of 15th Street, Auto Burglary
A victim returned to his car to find the driver’s side window smashed. The victim reported that a bag containing a laptop was stolen from the backseat. Video of the theft was later obtained by police revealing that two suspects were involved in the crime. No arrests have been made.
August 7, 9:42 p.m., 400 Block of Collingwood, Burglary and Possession of Stolen Property
The police were called to the scene of a burglary of an unoccupied residence. The police apprehended two suspects as they were leaving the location.
The suspects had in their possession items that were stolen from inside a car that was stolen from the same block earlier in the day. Both suspects were arrested.
August 5, Between 6:30 and 10:10 a.m., Unit Block of Cumberland, Burglary
A suspect entered the victim’s apartment and stole some property. There were no signs of forced entry.
August 8, 3:18 p.m., 100 Block of Church Street, Attempted Robbery
A victim was approached by a male suspect carrying a handgun and demanded money. The victim did not have any money and told the suspect so. The suspect then ran away.
August 2, 11:40 p.m., 18th and Castro Streets, Battery
The victim and a friend were walking along the street and passed the suspect. The suspect made a brief statement and suddenly punched the victim.
August 1, 8:30 p.m., 900 Block of 14th Street, Bicycle Theft
A man placed his bicycle under the porch of his home, unlocked. When he returned to retrieve his bike, it was gone.
July 24, 2:17 a.m., Church Street at 20th Street, Robbery
A suspect approached a victim and grabbed the victim’s jewelry. After a brief struggle, the suspect fled the scene with the stolen jewelry. No arrest has been made.
July 23, 1 a.m., Castro and Market Streets, Robbery
A male suspect approached a man carrying a handbag and grabbed for the bag. The two men struggled for the property, but the suspect eventually gained possession of it and ran off. No arrest has been made.
July 22, 12:00 a.m., 16th Street at Guerrero Street, Possession of a Firearm and Resisting Arrest
Police pulled over three suspects for a routine traffic violation and suspicion of stolen registration tabs. Upon being pulled over the suspect in the front passenger seat began to flee from the car and dropped a loaded pistol in the process.
The driver of the car and the third passenger were arrested.
July 21, 2:30 p.m., Market Street at Noe Street, Auto Burglary
A suspect entered an unlocked car and stole some property. Witnesses saw the suspect running from the scene. No arrests were made.
July 21, 6:00 p.m., 500 Block of Church Street, Auto Burglary
A car was broken into through the passenger side window and property was stolen. Witnesses saw a suspect running from the scene. No arrest has been made.
