Off the Beading Path Closes – SF Music Box Company Moving In
Off the Beading Path, a shop that specializes in beads and jewelry accessories, has closed. Situated at the corner of 18th and Douglass streets, the shop officially closed its doors the last week of June.

The SF Music Box Company has posted help wanted signs on the windows announcing that it is moving into the space. A phone recording at the number listed for Off the Beading Path said the new store will open by mid-July.

Although the company’s name may conjure up the idea of local ownership, the SF Music Box Company’s Web site says the company was started in the City in 1978, but is now owned by Calendar Club, a subsidiary of Barnes & Noble, based in Austin, Texas.

Off the Beading Path moved in shortly after Castro Yoga vacated the space in November of 2004. For many years prior, the space was occupied by Keifer’s Market which opened after World War II.

Richmond/Ermet AIDS Foundation ‘Help is On the Way’ Bash is Aug. 5
The Richmond/Ermet AIDS Foundation (REAF), a non-profit organization that raises funds for AIDS service provider agencies in the Castro and throughout the Bay Area, is throwing its annual fundraising gala on Sunday, Aug. 5.

Titled “Help is on the Way Goes to the Movies,” the show will be presented at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre. Gala ticket holders are invited to a pre-show black-tie gala reception and silent auction featuring hors d’oeuvres provided by many top SF restaurants and wine bars. Performance-only tickets are $75.

Proceeds benefit Aguilas, AIDS Legal Referral Panel, Maitri, STOP AIDS Project and Vital Life Services, Oakland.

This year “Help is on the Way” will feature performances by “American Idol” star Kimberley Locke, Broadway/TV stars Lucy Lawless, Susan Anton, Joey McIntyre, Bruce Vilanch, Marissa Jaret Winokur, BD Wong, Valarie Pettiford, Carole Cook and Jason Graae.

In addition, there will be performances by recording star Phoebe Snow, Paula West and Connie Champagne. Members from the cast of “Jersey Boys” will also make an appearance.

The foundation was born from the grassroots efforts of two mothers, Barbara Richmond and the late Peggy Ermet, who lost their only sons to AIDS as a way to honor their memories by helping to alleviate the suffering of those living with HIV/AIDS.
