Book Club: Tuesday, July 13, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. We are thrilled to partner with local independent bookseller, A Different Light Bookstore, to bring you our new bimonthly book club. We kick off this month with “Role Models” by John Waters. To participate, purchase the book and read through page 160 by July 13. Oscar Raymundo of A Different Light will lead us in a fabulous conversation about Water’s new literary masterpiece. Birding The Hill: Friday, July 16, 8 a.m. Explore Corona Heights Park to check out its avian inhabitants with Audubon experts. Birders will circle the hill to look into several habitats, the east canyon, the south cliffs, the north forest, and the hilltop grasslands. Beginning birders are welcome. The walk lasts about two hours and includes several stairs and a steep path to climb. Ages 5 and up, admission is free. Randall Museum, 199 Museum Way.

Extrasolar Planets and NASA’s Kepler Mission: Wednesday, July 21, 7:30 p.m. Jack Lissauer from NASA’s Ames Research Center presents on Extrasolar Planets & NASA’s Kepler Mission to learn more about the vast array of planets that orbit stars outside our solar system. NASA’s Kepler spacecraft, launched in March of 2009, will extend the search for distant planets from unearthly massive gaseous orbs to objects akin to Earth. Lissauer will present an overview of current knowledge of exoplanets, early results from Kepler, and a preview of what is expected. Free. Randall Museum. 199 Museum Way.

Smack Dab Open Mic: Wednesday, July 21, 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. All ages, all genders. If you’d like to perform at the open mic, please bring five minutes of whatever you want to share. Musicians: one song. Prose writers: that’s about two and a half double spaced pages of prose. We’re the friendliest open mic you’ll find but we pay attention to time so that nobody accumulates further open mic-related PTSD. Magnet, 4122 18th St.

Songs of the Sea/Canciones del Mar with ZunZun: Thursday, July 22, 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. ZunZun performs on a variety of instruments.
