Monster Masks: Saturday, July. 12, 1-4 p.m. Cut, fold, glue, and embellish to create a fantastic monster mask. $3 per child and $5 per parent/child combo. San Francisco Amateur Astronomers’ Lecture Series: Wednesday, July 16, 8 p.m. Join Dr. Claire Chapin, instructor in physics and astronomy at Merritt College, for an engaging talk, “Interpreting the Dance of Gravity in the Universe,” about the role of gravity in astronomy – from its roots in Newton’s discovery and formulation to the role it now plays in modern theories and black holes. Dr. Chapin holds an B.S. in Aeronautical engineering from Purdue University and a doctorate in engineering and physics, also from Purdue. Open to all ages but geared toward adults. Admission is free. Eureka Valley Promotion Association (EVPA): Thursday, July 17, 7:30 p.m. Eureka Valley Recreation Center, 100 Collingwood St. June is our annual business meeting. Birding the Hill: Friday, July 18 (& Aug. 15), 8 a.m. Come to Corona Heights Park to learn more about its avian inhabitants. The two-hour walk involves climbing a steep path and several stairs. Call ahead at (415) 554-9600 x16 if you need to borrow binoculars. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Ages 5 and up are welcome, and there is no cost. Screening of “Burning Man: Voyage in Utopia”: Friday, July 18, 8 p.m. Laurent Le Gaull’s film depicts the journey of artist David Best and the building of the Temple as a spiritual icon and quest for participants of Burning Man. French artist Nelly Mella produced the score. $10 general admission and $75-$150 VIP Reception. Castro Theatre, 429 Castro St. Lorca Summer Festival: July 18 and 26. 8 p.m. The Lorca Summer Festival offers a rare opportunity for Bay Area audiences to experience Spanish author Federico Garcia Lorca’s rarely performed tragedies, “Blood Wedding,” “Yerma” and “House of Bernarda Alba,” produced by Pangs Theater and directed by its Artistic Director Wolfgang Thompson. Sun, Wind, & Water Day: Saturday, July 19, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Celebrate the earth and sky by joining us for a hands-on family fun day exploring the sun, wind, and water to appreciate what all these for us. Visitors can make sun wheels, wind wheels, water wheels, and paddleboats. Test your patience at cooking solar s’mores and try your luck at a water balloon tossing contest. Admission is free. Natural History Lecture Series: Thursday, July 24, 7:30 p.m. Join guest speaker Craig Nikitas for a multi-part slide show titled “Hawks, Falcons, and other Raptors of the Bay Area,” revealing 19 species of raptors that can be seen in the Bay area. Learn where the densest raptor migration on the West Coast can be observed and discover how to identify those species that hunt, live, and breed right here in the city. Nikitas is an urban planner with the city and county of San Francisco. He volunteers with the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory, where he has banded raptors for 14 years as part of an ongoing study to monitor their populations in the Marin Headlands. Space Ecology: The Final Frontier of Environmentalism: Wednesday, Aug. 20. SF Amateur Astronomers’ Lecture Series. Fifty years after Sputnik launched the space age, humans are turning space into yet another junkyard, with millions of pieces of man-made debris orbiting Earth. Join Lynda Williams, physics instructor at Santa Rosa Junior College, for a dynamic presentation on the current situation of space debris and a look at possible future scenarios. Meet The Animals: Saturdays, 11:15 a.m. – noon. Discover the Randall Museum’s own menagerie of rescued animals as they venture out from their cages to greet visitors. Learn about the various wild animals that live right among us in the heart of the city. The museum invites visitors to explore a miniature San Francisco to see the variety of ecosystems and creatures that exist in our very own backyards and gardens, from the common to the unfamiliar. Learn about this wealth of wildlife through interactive exhibits and even a few live creatures hidden throughout. Admission is free. Randall Museum.
