By Bill Sywak
The Eureka Valley/Harvey Milk Library, situated at the corner of 16th and Pond streets, will close for 18 months for renovations starting March 2.
To commemorate the event, a party for the public will be held on Saturday, March 1, the last day of operations.
The event will take place at the library between 1 and 3 p.m. It will feature food, remarks by city dignitaries and entertainment for neighborhood children.
The renovations will be funded by a bond measure passed by voters in November of 2000 that provided for $106 million to renovate city libraries.
According to branch manager Karen Sundheim, renovation activity will focus on over a dozen special projects, including seismic strengthening, better lighting, more computers with online resources and express check-out machines.
It will also be an opportunity to install wireless access. The estimated cost for the renovation is $3.6
million.
While the library is closed, residents are asked to use other neighborhood libraries. The Western Addition library re-opened on Feb. 2 and the Noe Valley Branch is situated to re-open in March.
Some of the branch’s books will be packed away while others will be transferred to other branches. Additionally, a bookmobile provided by the city will be situated out front a few days a week.
