DogFest 2009 to Take Place at Duboce Park April 18
McKinley Elementary School’s DogFest 2009 will be held on Saturday, April 18, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Duboce Park. DogFest is a dog show and carnival and a unique fundraising event that benefits McKinley Elementary School located at the corner of 14th and Castro streets.
Last year, DogFest brought out 97 dogs to compete in various light-hearted contests like “Best Bark” and “Best Ears” while kids of all ages enjoyed jumpy houses, face painting and carnival games.
The proceeds from DogFest fill in the gaps for student enrichment programs such as art, music and science where state and district funds continue to fall short. Organizers are encouraging McKinley neighbors and businesses to come out, have fun, and help support what is hoped to be a long-standing community event.
Dog owners can visit sfdogfest.org to register their dog in one of the many contests. Registration will continue through the day of the event in Duboce Park.
For more information, e-mail dogfest@mckinleyschool.org or call Katy Wilcoxen at (415) 710-7387.
Mission Police Captain Honors Fallen Oakland Officers
Captain Stephen Tacchini of Mission Station, which covers the Castro, wrote the following:
“The tragic murder of four Oakland Police officers underscores the serious acts of violence our society is experiencing. We as police officers mourn especially deeply and feel so much sorrow and sadness for the families and friends who are grieving at this time. I did not know any of the officers, but I work with hundreds just like them everyday. I have attended too many police funerals and hope this will be the last, but sadly it may not. Please include the officers and their families in your thoughts and prayers.”
SFIFF to Kick Off at Castro Theatre April 23
The SF International Film Festival (SFIFF) runs from April 23 through May 7 at theaters across the City. The Castro Theatre will host an opening night screening of “La Mission,” director Peter Bratt’s film about the vibrancy and violence that play out daily in the streets of the Mission District. The screening starts at 7 p.m. On April 29, a restored print of “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” will screen with an in-person interview with Robert Redford.
For tickets and complete program information visit sffs.org or call (925) 866-9559.
